In February, we reported on anticipated changes in the banking industry due to legislative banking reform as part of the Dodd-Frank Reform Act. Reforms are in place that will limit the amount banks charge retailers in debit card swipe fees, also called debit card interchange fees, from 44 cents per transaction, to a cap of 12 cents per transaction. This results in a 14 billion dollar loss in revenue for banks, according to CardHub.com. The changes are found in the Durbin Amendment to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, and many lobbyists and other parties attempted to delay the Amendment, but failed to do so earlier this month.
We wanted to update you on these reforms and what it means for you. With the Durbin Amendment, the changes to swipe fees will take effect on July 21.
The Department of Educations Direct Loan Servicing Center is in the process of changing their website. Students can now access their direct loan information at . Anyone accessing the old site should be automatically redirected to the new website, but make sure to bookmark it as well!
Unfortunately, as with most major website changes, there are still some issues that need resolving. The DoE released a statement yesterday explaining that some borrowers may have trouble accessing the new site, and are working to quickly resolve the issues.
